Now that we have done some research and looked further into 'The Big Issue' and what it is all about, we started to think about ways that we could use this knowledge within our project; we aim to make a typeface and so have began thinking about how we can translate the information we have into the creation of the typeface. We want to create our own gridded paper, on which we would design the typeface. By designing our own grid we would be able to have a much stronger concept behind the typeface that wouldn't necessarily be obvious. I tried thinking of different ways that I could create a grid from words and numbers. These were some of my ideas:
  • INSP - 24 languages
  • INSP - 40 countries
  • Big Issue - 100 new vendors a week
  • Big Issue - Vendors buy Big Issue for £1.25
  • Big Issue - Vendors sell Big Issue for £2.50
  • Big Issue - It is sold in: United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, Namibia, Kenya, Taiwan, Malawi.
  • Big Issue - Founded in 1991 by John Bird and Gordon Roddick.
  • Big Issue - Weekly (7 days, 52 weeks)

I then also thought about shapes, as these would obviously be needed in order to create a grid. I thought about how different shapes could be related to our project, coming up with these ideas:
  • Circle (repeating process)
  • Rectangle (current logo)
  • Triangle (the paper, online media and the vendors)

I then started looking into shapes as I felt these related well to our subject matter and would create a strong foundation upon which we could create good typography. As well as Harrison, I began looking into what various shapes meant and how we could use them to further strengthen our concept.

After having looked at the various meanings of shapes, as well as interviewing 'The Big Issue' vendor, we felt that we could now create more meaningful and relevant grids. This was left to Harrison, and this is the final grid that he created:
