OUGD 504 - Studio Brief 1

After having had our previous induction in using the laser cutter, I decided to book a slot and experiment with the process a little more myself. I wanted to look at the way in which the laser cutter worked with imagery as well as the ways in which each of the different types of effects, such as raster and engrave, could work together. Here are my test pieces:

This first test was looking at debossing, in which the image is cut away from a piece of wood. This is then placed into the press with the stock and the pressure forces the paper through the space in the wood. I think for a first attempt this worked really well and is something I would like to look at working with in the future.

This second experiment was looking at the various things that can be done with the laser cutter. I have used all four of the settings that can be used: Raster, Kiss-Cut, Engrave and Cut-Through. I really like the way in which the laser cutter rasters imagery, this is something I never knew could be done. It has really opened my eyes to what the laser cutter can do.
