Thinking about the sessions that we have been having over the past two weeks, all of which have been focused around the use of and importance of concept within design, I have come up with a concept for my info-pack.
To me, design for print is a very broad and mainly unknown topic. The aim of this brief, I think, is for us to begin exploration and experimentation with different processes and alternatives to digital printing. In our session in which we looked at logo design and branding, we analysed the logo for 'NASA'. This got me thinking about space and the links between space and design for print. Although these links may not be obvious and applicable to everyone, there are many links between the two in relation to my understanding to the topics.
Space, to me, is all about exploration and going into the unknown which is much like what we are being asked to do within this brief. In comparison to design for print as a whole, I know little about the subject. I think 'space' could be a very aesthetically pleasing whilst also clever visual metaphor for the topic 'design for print'.
I have been trying to think of words that I would associate with 'space' that could also possibly be applicable to 'design for print'. These will be the themes that I will focus on throughout the project:
- Exploration
- Discovery
- Ambition
- Freedom
- Mystery
In order to get some understanding of various processes that I am interested in using I created a quick design based around my concept; I am hopefully going to use this design with various techniques such as silk screen, foiling, spot varnishing, die-cutting, embossing and debossing. This will help to give me knowledge of the different available processes as well as an understanding of when each process will be appropriate and useful.
