OUGD 404 - Who Are You?

Using our 'Who Are You?' we had to create the impression that the phrase had an accent. These were the ten accents that we have to visually communicate:

  • Geordie
  • Welsh
  • Yorkshire
  • Irish
  • Pirate
  • Essex
  • Scouse
  • Jamaican
  • Russian
  • Australian
In order to do so we could use various point sizes etc. Here are my 10:

Geordie - Despite it's reputation, I think that the Geordie accent can be quite smooth and flowing. I feel that this font shows the true Geordie accent.

Australian - For this, I have put emphasis on the 'wh' sound and the 'u' sound as I feel that these should be slightly dragged out and exaggerated.

Russian - This is a very obvious choice for a Russian font and is the kind of font commonly used for Russian style design.

Jamaican - When I think Jamaican I stereotypically think Rastafarian. To me, this font seems to visually represent this in a subtle way.

Pirate -  Another obvious choice for this accent; the emphasis has been added on to the 'r' sound.

Welsh - When I think about the Welsh I am reminded of a program 'Gavin and Stacey' and this font is very similar to the one that they use. I have added some emphasis to the 'o' sounds within the question.

Yorkshire - When I think Yorkshire, I think about the Yorkshire moors and the program 'Emmerdale'. This fonts reminds me of the font used within that.

Irish - This is a stereotypical font used to represent Ireland and the Irish accent; very Celtic in appearance.

Essex - When I think essex, I think 'The Only Way Is Essex' and the font used for that which is actually very simple and plain; the people from Essex are seen very differently however.

Scouse - This is the font used for 'The Beatles' which is what I associate Liverpool and the Scouse accent with.

I found this task surprisingly difficult. I think that this is because I don't have a good ear for accents at all and found it difficult to hear were the emphasis should be placed on most fonts. Also, I don't have a very good knowledge of accents and places and so for most I went with things that I relate to the place of origin as opposed to the actual accent.
