Studio Brief - Research, Collect, Communicate: PRODUCT

Throughout the production of all of my design work and final outcomes, I was constantly referring to and taking inspiration from my research. This meant that I kept focus and knew what I was aiming to achieve whilst I was designing.

I started by simply gathering some information and written ideas as a basis. This then gave me starting points to begin producing visuals.

I then started to create this typeface; it was constructed from an anchor that I made with basic shapes. I quite like this alphabet and think visually it is very interesting. However I don't feel that, even though it is based on a nautical theme, that is suits Dry Dock.

I continued to create visuals through producing illustrations of various nautical based images. Things such as anchors and food are a constant theme throughout my design exploration; things that are linked with either Dry Dock or linked with the nautical theme that is running throughout this project.

These are my beer mat designs. I created a series of 12 so that I had a wide range of examples to choose from, however I feel that they work well as a set of 12. By simply using various parts of imagery I had already created, as well as including different patterns or shapes depending on the image, to create these designs. I have kept them all the same shape and the designs one colour to ensure they are kept simple and therefore shall work alongside the rest of the work I produce. Each beer mat represents a different aspect of Dry Dock, either through just imagery or imagery as well as text.

I then created my menu, once again from mainly using imagery I had already created through my experiment and development process. However, I did add little icons for each section of the menu, ensuring that I was displaying some information as image and therefore fulfilling the brief.

This is my final design and composition for my promotional flier. From pulling existing design work I had, as well as taking compositional inspiration from the work of Kate Prior, I managed to construct this. Each section shows something that Dry Dock has to offer, but does so through imagery mainly. I have tried to use a similar technique and style as that of current popular flier's that is applicable to my market audience (young, 'cool' students)

I then edited my flier to create this monochromatic version that could easily, and cheaply, be reproduced; it could either be reproduced through digital or screen printing. Using only one colour makes the design much more bold and high impact, forcing people to want to pick it up and read it which is what makes the design so successful.

Creating panoramic images:

Go to file, automate and photo merge. It should then bring up a window similar to the one below, from here upload the set of images you wish to align and merge.

PostCards:

These are my first attempts at creating a lay-out. My plan is to create a design within Illustrator to just ensure that the shapes are all precise and accurate; I would then take this lay-out into Photoshop were I would manipulate my photographs using various methods and techniques.

These are my first attempts at creating my post cards. I think that, although it does work visually, there is too much going on. This reduces from the overall appearance of the design and think I will try to simplify the design somehow. I then decided to create a diamond shape using triangles. To do so, I decided that I would only include sections of the diamond within four of my designs; the last of my five designs would be the entire diamond. These examples show the transition between my original photograph and my final outcome in which I have edited the levels and curves in order to make my triangles stand out more.

These are my final diamonds. To make these, I have simply taken each different section from my four other designs and put them together to create the whole diamond. Once again, I have adjusted the levels and curve within Photoshop to make it stand out and become more bold.

To create the back of the Post-Cards, I took my final and whole diamond and reduced it in size. I then duplicated this numerous times in order to create a pattern from it.
